Your questions answered

Who is eligible to apply for this program?

Across our range of Talent Search initiatives, Queenslanders born between 2016 and 1994 (8-30 years old in 2024) are eligible for different programs.

Queenslanders aged 9 to 13 (born 2015 – 2011) are eligible for our Daredevils program. Those aged 13-23 (2011 – 2001) are eligible for our Olympic Talent Search.

Para-Sports are accepting athletes with an eligible impairment who are born between 2011 and 1994 (13 to 30 years). This means those who will be at least 13 in 2024 (born 2011) and no older than 30 in 2024 (born 1994).

What if I don’t fall within the age bracket?

Unfortunately, you are not eligible to be selected into the YouFor2032 program if you fall outside of the age brackets for Olympic or Paralympic sporting pathways. These age brackets are  determined based on the needs of our partner sports and the time required to master each sport.

Remember, YouFor2032 is not the only way for Queensland athletes to reach an elite sporting level. There are already great talent pathways operating at the local, regional and state levels where athletes are given opportunities through the respective sporting organisations. If you fall outside of our age ranges and want to have a go, join a local sporting club today!

Is YouFor2032 a multi-year program?

Yes, our quest to find the best athletes will continue over the coming years.

We have travelled all over Queensland since 2022.

If I'm not successful, what happens next?

The reality of elite sport is that less than 10% of athletes will ever reach the podium at an international event. At the QAS, while we are focused on developing our next generation of champions, it is important to us that each athlete who tests with us has a positive experience. To that end, every athlete who tests with the YouFor2032 program will:

  1. Receive their testing results compared to age-matched benchmarks*
  2. Access a contact listing of Regional Sport Development Officers or equivalent representatives from each of our partner sports to help you start your sporting journey
  3. Be eligible for an invitation to the next stage of the program
  4. Have access to YouFor2032 educational material aimed at parents, guardians, coaches and athletes to support your athletic development

*Applies only to Olympic Sport applicants. Paralympic Sport benchmarks coming soon!

Can I still aim to compete at the highest level, even if I don’t try out for YouFor2032

Absolutely! There are still plenty of opportunities for you. Sporting clubs, as well as State and National Sporting Organisations, are always on the lookout for emerging talent. If you perform well in your sport, you’re very likely to catch their attention and receive the support you need to reach the highest levels.

If I get offered a chance to try a new sport through YouFor2032, do I have to give up the sport/s that I am doing already?

In the beginning, no, you shouldn’t change a thing! If you do get selected by a sport, you will have the opportunity to participate in a three (3) month trial period – however, there is no guarantee that you will be invited to continue beyond this period. Learning a new sport can be helpful for developing your sporting abilities, even in your existing sports!

In the long term, if you are successful and are invited to continue with a YouFor2032 sport, it will be necessary for you to prioritise your time and energy and commit to your main sport. This will be done in a progressive way in consultation with you, your family and your coaching team.

I noticed that my Queensland region isn’t on the Phase 1 testing list. Can I still participate?

We strive to provide testing locations for all Queenslanders. In some locations, it is not feasible for us to travel there in 2024, however you are welcome to attend any of our testing sessions even if it is outside your area.

We are currently developing a new approach to identify and support talent in these locations.

Do I have to relocate from my home and region to join the YouFor2032 program?

In the beginning, no you won’t need to relocate. Sports are committed to making this program as inclusive as possible to allow as much talent to be developed irrespective of where you live. This means that Sports will make as many modifications as reasonably possible to help get you started and confident within your new sport. Longer term, if you are successful, you will find that you might need to travel more for your competitions or high level training. If you end up making a national squad or team, you may be required to relocate to ensure you are in the best possible environment to develop your sporting expertise.

I tested this year but was not chosen for a sport. Will there be other opportunities for those not successful?

YouFor2032 is about opportunity and choices, but never any guarantees. All aspiring athletes are invited to re-test in future rounds, to give you the best possible opportunity to be identified for a sport. We also encourage you to go ahead and jump in to the great sporting pathways already operating at a local, regional and state level – if you perform well, you are very likely to be noticed and supported.

What if my sport of choice isn‘t listed?

It is not possible for every sport to partner with the YouFor2032 program. The QAS has made a commitment to supporting those sports which increase the probability of developing future Queensland medallists. As an athlete, if you are looking to continue in a sport that is not listed or you are outside the age range for the high-performance sports, just stay put and remain active there.

Sports are already great at identifying talent for the future from within their own pathways. Alternatively, you can consider applying through the YouFor2032 program to see if you have what it takes to potentially make it in a different sport.

Can athletes with a disability also participate in this program?

Yes,  YouFor2032 includes 9 Paralympic Sport partners, and works closely with Paralympics Australia. If you have an eligible impairment and dreams of being an elite athlete, make sure you register – no sporting experience necessary! Visit the Paralympics Australia website for more information about eligible impairment types.

My preferred session is full. Will you open more?

There are a limited number of spots available in each test session. We recommend registering as soon as possible to secure your preferred testing time slot.

What is the AIS Future Green and Gold program and how is it different to the YouFor2032 Talent Search?

The AIS Future Green and Gold program is a national initiative which is designed to refer Queenslanders interested in being a future sporting champion to the YouFor2032 Talent Search. If you are a Queenslander looking to explore your future sporting dreams, we encourage you to apply directly to our program. If you know someone based outside of Queensland who might be a future sporting champion, they should apply to the Future Green and Gold program.
