QAS Review release and announcement it will become a Statutory Body

12 July 2024

Since we were founded more than 30 years ago, the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) has been an agency within the Queensland Government. Over this period, we have established ourselves as one of the nation’s most highly regarded institutes for the support of elite athletes, most recently achieving a record medal haul at Tokyo 2020.

We are looking forward to watching QAS-supported athletes and para-athletes once again take on the world in Paris, and we are proud to share that 40 QAS staff have been selected to support the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams, travel with national sporting organisations or take part in staging camps as part of Australia’s Paris 2024 campaign. This is our largest Olympic and Paralympic support contingent yet – and testament to the world-class expertise and skill of the QAS team.

Today, it was announced that the Queensland Government will take steps towards the QAS becoming a Statutory Body. We look forward to taking this next step in our corporate journey – post Paris. For today, tomorrow and until the final moments of the closing ceremony of the Paralympics, we are 100% focussed on supporting Queensland’s athletes, and the wider Australian team, in their preparation for the biggest event in world sport. We do this with the support and skills of our partners and colleagues across the sporting ecosystem and within the Department of Tourism and Sport. We talk about the village that supports an athlete, but a State supports the QAS Team.

We hope you are enjoying our ‘Behind the Extraordinary’ series and can’t wait to share more athlete stories in the lead up to, from and post-Paris.
