Paris Paralympics 2024 Results: Day 9

The Australian Dolphins had a sensational night in the pool with Queensland swimmers scooping six medals on the penultimate night of finals. Curtis McGrath is on track to become one of the greatest athletes in Paralympics history, advancing directly to the finals of his Para Canoe events. The Aussie Rollers ended their Paralympics campaign in fifth and Samantha Schmidt finished seventh in the world in the Women's F38 Discus Throw.

Para Swimming

Paralympic debutant Callum Simpson won a thrilling gold medal in the final of the Men's S8 100 metre Freestyle. The Sunshine Coast 17-year-old won in 58.23, just touching out the USA's Noah Jaffe (58.25). Callum is also taking home a gold in the Mixed 34 Points 4x100 metres Medley Relay to cap a stunning Games debut.

“It's everything I dreamed of, and I finally had my dream … it’s finally come true. It's amazing, it honestly is, and I wouldn’t be able to get here without my family," Simpson said.

Ben Hance claimed gold in the S14 100 metres Backstroke, becoming the first Paralympian to defend a men's 100m Backstroke S14 title. The 24-year-old earlier broke his own World Record in his Heat with a blistering time of 56.52, before recording 57.04 in the final to claim gold. Hance also has a silver medal from Paris as part of the Mixed S14 4x100 metres Relay team.

It was an emotional win for Hance who paid tribute to his late dad post-race in what he described as the "hardest year of my life".

Tom Gallagher collected his third medal of the Paris Paralympic Games with bronze in the Men's S10 100 metres Backstroke. The 25-year-old trains on the Gold Coast under Olympic medallist Ashley Callus. Gallagher is competing in his second Games and has achieved an incredible haul winning won gold in the Men's S10 50 metres Freestyle and bronze in the Men's S10 100 metres Freestyle.

“I don't really do too much backstroke, but I try bloody hard. And you know, I think this week was just about racing and I got the job done,” he said.

Sunshine Coast based swimmer Emily Beecroft collected her first individual medal of the Games with bronze in the Women's S9 100 metres Butterfly Final. The 24-year-old three-time Paralympian was also part of the gold medal winning Mixed 34 Points 4x100 metres Medley Relay team.

Paralympic debutant Lewis Bishop bagged bronze in the final of the Men's S9 100 metres Butterfly. It was the first ever Paralympic medal for the 19-year-old who finished just behind fellow Aussie Timothy Hodge who claimed silver.

Rachael Watson added another bronze medal to her cabinet coming third in the Women's S4 50 metres Freestyle Final. The sprint veteran and S3 swimmer swum up a class to contest her gold medals in this event in Rio and Tokyo. Watson produced the fastest 50m freestyle performance of her career – a PB and Oceania record.

This is the 32-year-old's second bronze in Paris after finishing third in the Women's S3 100 metres Freestyle Final.

Australian Paralympic Team flag bearer Brenden Hall finished seventh in his Heat of the Men's S9 100 metres Butterfly to miss a spot in the Final. The 31-year-old from the Sunshine Coast has claimed a bronze medal in Paris in the Men's S9 400 metres Freestyle.

Maddie McTernan came fifth in the final of the Women's S14 100 metres Backstroke. The 23-year-old from the Gold Coast produced a time of 1:09.70 to finish less than a second outside the medals. Maddie has already won a silver medal in Paris as a member of the MIXED S14 4x100 metres Freestyle Relay team.

Sunshine Coast swimmer Ricky Betar finished sixth in the final of the Men's S14 100 metres Backstroke. The 20-year-old finished 3.29 seconds behind Queensland gold medallist Ben Hance (57.04). Ricky is taking a bronze medal home with him from the Men's SM14 200 metres Individual Medley.

Para Canoe

Curtis McGrath is on track to become one of the greatest athletes in Paralympics history, advancing directly to the Men's KL2 Kayak Single 200 metres Final A (42.66) and the Men's VL3 Va'a Single 200 metres Final A (48.97). The triple gold medallist who is based on the Gold Coast was the fastest qualifier in both races and is aiming to win gold medals in three successive Games.

Tokyo silver medallist Susan Seipel advanced to the semi-finals for both the Women's VL2 Va'a Single 200 metres and the Women's KL2 Kayak Single 200 metres after placing third in both her heats. The 38-year-old from Ipswich just missed direct passage to Final A in both events.

Wheelchair Basketball

The Australian Men's Wheelchair Basketball team featuring QAS supported players Bill Latham, Eithen Leard and Sam White ended their Paris campaign on winning note, defeating the Netherlands 82-75 in the 5-6 playoff to finish in fifth place for the tournament. Latham continued his solid form for the Rollers with 20 points.

Para Athletics

Bundaberg's Samantha Schmidt has finished seventh in the Women's F38 Discus Throw. The 22-year-old threw a Season Best 33.05 metres to finish just outside the medals. Schmidt is competing in her second Games after a sixth place finish in Tokyo.

Para Cycling

Korey Boddington did not finish in the Para Cycling Men's C4-5 Road Race after getting caught behind a crash on Lap 1 and falling off his bike.

The QAS supported cyclist from the Sunshine Coast has been competing for less than two years but is riding away from Paris with a gold and a bronze medal from three events. Earlier in the Games, the 27-year-old won Gold in the Men's C4-5 1000 metres Time Trial (setting a Games Record on the way) and teamed up with Allan Gordon and Alistair Donohoe to claim bronze in the Open C1-5 750 metres Team Sprint.
