BMX brilliance: Australia’s BMX Freestyle squad heads to Olympic Qualifiers in Shanghai

14 May 2024

Five of Australia’s top freestyle BMX athletes are looking to book their tickets to Paris in a two-part Olympic qualifying series beginning on Thursday in Shanghai, China.

Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Logan Martin, Alec Danelutti, Jaie Toohey, Olympian Natalya Diehm and Sarah Nicki will go up against the world’s best freestyle BMX athletes in events in Shanghai and Budapest.

Gold Coast athlete Jaie Toohey believes the team has an advantage training alongside gold medallist and best mate Logan Martin.

“We do have a good track record for BMX Freestyle in the Olympics. We have one of the best, if not the best rider in the world. Logan. He’s my best friend, I ride with him on a daily basis and we’re always helping each other better ourselves.”

AusCycling Technical Director ‑ BMX, Performance, Wade Bootes said the QAS-supported team was looking good as they finalised their tricks for their 60-second competition runs.

“It’s going to be a tough ask, but we’re going there with good ambitions of them to put on their best performances and focus on what we can.”

Olympian Natalya Diehm is hoping to compete in her second Games after placing fifth in Tokyo 2020 despite riding with a major injury. She said the resources provided by the Queensland Academy of Sport were invaluable in supporting her recovery post-Games and in the lead up to Paris.

“I’ve actually been in more rehab than I have on-bike stuff. So, to make it this far is just an applaud to myself. I’m so proud. I could not have done it without the QAS’ support.”

We’re wishing the team all the best in Shanghai!
